Strengthening Australia’s Chlorine Supply Chain

Coogee is pleased to announce its decision to establish a chlorine drumming facility at our Lytton chlor-alkali plant in Queensland.

As one of Australia’s leading chlor-alkali producers, Coogee has been manufacturing and handling chlorine safely for nearly 40 years. This investment represents another important step in supporting Australian industry with reliable, local supply of critical chemicals.

Drummed chlorine plays an essential role across a range of industries. Currently, Australia’s supply of drummed chlorine is heavily reliant on a single production source in Victoria, whilst the market is nation-wide including in regional communities across Qld, NT, SA, and WA. The new facility at Lytton will provide an additional domestic supply option, improving resilience and supply security for Australian businesses.

The project will see Coogee’s Lytton site transition to a Major Hazard Facility (MHF), and the liquefied chlorine will be supplied using some of Lytton’s excess chlorine capacity. This also supplements Coogee’s current import supply chain of chlorine drums into Western Australia and Far-North Queensland. Coogee brings extensive experience in the safe operation of MHFs across Australia, underpinned by robust process safety systems, operational discipline, and an exemplary safety record.
