Coogee QCA

Overview

Coogee is Australia’s second largest manufacturer of chlor-alkali products with three chlor-alkali facilities across Australia – two in the Perth region of Western Australia and one in Lytton, Queensland. The business was initially established to service the emerging local titanium dioxide pigment industry as dedicated suppliers of bulk chlorine and caustic soda feedstock.

Secondary products include hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite, and these two products, together with caustic soda are sold into the chemical, mineral processing, mining, water treatment, galvanizing and swimming pool markets.

Our History

Our first plant commenced production in 1988 supplying a new, greenfield, titanium dioxide pigment plant, located in the Kemerton Industrial Park, near Bunbury. The chlor-alkali plant uses German designed Lurgi monopolar membrane cells to produce chlorine and caustic soda by the electrolysis of pure brine, and has given very reliable service for over 20 years.

A second identical sister plant, located in the Kwinana Industrial Area, was started up in 1991 to supply feedstock for the local pigment plant. The production capacity of the Kwinana plant was recently expanded with the commissioning, in early 2010, of a second chlorine production train and an upgrade of common site infrastructure servicing both the old and new cell rooms. The new chlorine capacity at Kwinana is produced in a UK designed Ineos BiChlor membrane electrolyser. This is a "state of the art" large scale bipolar cell with significantly lower energy consumption than the older Lurgi cells.

A third plant, expanding the operations into Queensland, Coogee purchased Elite Chemicals in 2012, making Coogee one of Australia's largest manufacturers and suppliers of Chlor-Alkali products. The Lytton plant, located near the port of Brisbane, manufactures and markets a specialised range of maintenance chemical products.

Lytton is the only chlor alkali plant in Queensland. Producing Sodium Hypochlorite, Hydrochloric Acid and Caustic Soda it services a range of markets including water treatment, industrial and the swimming pool industry. The manufacturing facility incorporates four chlor alkali electrolysis cell rooms. The site is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

More recently

In 2015 Coogee undertook a significant expansion of the Lytton facility. A new state of the art cell room significantly increased capacity. Like the Kwinana expansion of 2010, this incorporated Ineos BiChlor technology. As well as providing increased capacity of sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda, it also provided greater flexibility and redundancy within the operation. 2015 also saw the start of 50% caustic soda manufacture and supply from this site.

In 2018 Elite Chemicals, trading as Ionics Australasia Pty Ltd, rebranded as Coogee QCA.

Coogee QCA also operate an extensive network of storage and distribution centres supporting our customers in regional Queensland and New South Wales. Distribution centres with dedicated bulk transport capability, are located in Cairns, Townsville, Bowen (via our partner Bowen Packaging), Gladstone and Coffs Harbour.
